Hundreds of abstracted bird figures, dating back to the Bronze Age and earlier, have been found in the Carpathian Basin. They are hollow and contain stones or bits of clay that enable them to be used as rattles.

Lusatian and Pomeranian cultures produced cinerary urns with distinctive abstract faces on them. Some were simple, with a bowl turned over as a lid, while others had more bust-like shapes and carefully modeled hats.
